DAIRY GOATS

We’re actively  pursuing high milk yield through introducing  Saanen stock and bloodlines, but also need to keep part local for robust health and disease resistance.

But we       need to produce more
milk to drastically improve
childhood nutrition, so we’re
working towards developing
a controlled and structured
Breeding Programme and
Stud Facility on our Chiringa site.      

 Another challenge is good  feeding.
         Malawi’s climate swings
              between flooding and
                 drought, so adequate
                   supplies of quality
                    foodstuff are hard  to
                     come by.  We’re
                        investigating
                           innovative  
                                  new ways of
                          gathering and
                          storing a balanced
                         diet all year round
       
                        Despite being in the
                     Middle of the African
                    Bush we’re striving to
            create a centre of excellence
         that will eventually equip the
        local community with highly    
       nutritious goats milk for the
    vulnerable and opportunities for
   enterprise.

“Local” pygmy goats   wander freely  around the rural areas, but are not suitable for milking. So, as we attempt to build a dairy herd
we have to look further afield.
The best goats available initially were half a dozen hybrids of indecipherable origin.
Children in Malawi  don’t  have
birth certificates,  so  why would
goats have pedigree paperwork?
